Taking our buses back into public control: What’s next for the campaign?
Wednesday 28 August 2024, 6:30-8pm
Unite Scotland, 145/165 West Regent St, G2 4RZ
Last September, Get Glasgow Moving helped to launch Better Buses for Strathclyde – a new region-wide campaign putting pressure on our transport authority – SPT – to use the new powers in the Transport Act 2019 to bring our bus network back into public control.
Our aim was to influence SPT’s new Strathclyde Regional Bus Strategy, which will set the direction of transport policy in our region for years to come. More than 10,000 people signed our petition, and in March 2024 we had a big breakthrough when SPT finally agreed to take forward the powers.
SPT then ran a public consultation on its proposals from 2 April – 13 May 2024. Nearly 3,000 people responded, with 86% support for SPT setting up a new publicly-owned bus operator for our region, and 76% support for bus franchising (regulation of the private bus companies).
Now that we have secured such a huge mandate for SPT to utilise these powers, we invite you to join our public meeting to discuss the next steps for the Better Buses for Strathclyde campaign.
We’ll set out how long the process is likely to take, highlight key points when the campaign will need to mobilise and identify opportunities for lobbying the Scottish Government and the new UK Government to help accelerate and support the process.
This is a free public meeting open to Get Glasgow Moving members and non-members alike. We encourage all those attending to support our volunteer-run campaign for better public transport by becoming a member (you can join in advance or on the door).
